Microscopic Sea Ice Organisms (MicroSIO) Laboratory

Within the Arctic Marine System Ecology (AMSE) research group at UiT, the MicroSIO Laboratory works with more than ten cultures of sea ice algae. Here, scientists test algal responses to environmental change under controlled experimental conditions using a variety of methodologies, including 14C & O2-based tracers. To support this work, MicroSIO makes use of specialized clean lab and cold-room (+4 to -20°C) facilities.

Recent Work from MicroSIO:

Zoé Forgereau (in press). MSc work. Photophysiological responses of bottom sea-ice algae to fjord dynamics and rapid freshening. Frontiers in Marine Sciences.

Janina Osanen 2022. MSc Thesis: Application of an underwater hyperspectral imager (UHI) for the study of sea ice algae.
